Relational database as the name itself indicates tallies the data on the basis of common features found well within the data set. The data groups that we arrive at finally after the application of a relational database would be easy to comprehend. Hence it can be said that a relational database is a simplifying application that makes the complex job of data grouping easy.
An example of a relational database application would be nice to make the concept of a relational database understandable. Imagine that a data set consisting of all the births that have taken place in a county. These groups can be nicely and easily grouped by the year of births by the application of a relational database. Here the grouping was done in terms of relation with the year of birth. In the same way grouping can be done in relation to the sex of the child or in relation to the blood group of the baby as well.
Relationship database has thus made the job of grouping a bigger data set simple. From bigger data sets several smaller data sets can be prepared by the thorough application of a relational database. In other words it can be said that a database arrived at by the application of a relation is called ‘relational database’. Relational databases are highly preferred in the storing of medical records, personal data and financial records.
It has to be understood that a relational database is in short a collection of relations. A relation can also be called a table. Hence a relational database is a collection of tables. The objective of a relational database is to simply a universal data set. Universal data sets too contain several tables but they are not relational tables. This is the important difference between universal data set and a relational database. This difference has to be well understood to appreciate the concept of a relational database.
